As I get older, I become more obsessed with skincare. And, over the years, I've learned of essential ingredients needed to combat discoloration, wrinkles, sagging and more. Here are 5 must-have ingredients and products that are essential for anti-aging.
Each of these products are items that I always use, even when traveling. They've proven to be my favorite skincare products, and each contains at least one must-have ingredient for anti-aging!
Niacinamide, also known as B3, has many known skincare benefits. These include increasing skin cell's metabolism, making older skin act like they did when they were younger. As a result, it means better skin elasticity, help with discoloration, and better levels of collagen.
I get my daily dose of B3 from my favorite sunscreen, EltaMD sunscreen. Not only does this satisfy the number 1 rule of anti-aging (daily sunscreen), it is the best sunscreen I've ever tried. It's non-greasy, compatible with very sensitive skin, and is even moisturizing.
Best of all, this sunscreen, recommended to me by my dermatologist, incorporates one of skincare's top ingredients for anti-aging.
Ladies, if you haven't gone to a dermatologist for your skin, schedule an appointment as soon as possible. A visit to the doctor gets you access to potent prescription skincare not available elsewhere. And, oftentimes, with insurance, these amazing prescription products are much cheaper than less effective over-the-counter beauty supplies.
The most prescribed anti-ager from doctors is a high-strength retinol. This stuff will seem magical if you've never used it before. Because, I suffer from occasional adult acne, my insurance makes each tube just $15! Prescription retinol helps with acne, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and texture.
-Outside of the US, these creams can sometimes be bought at the local drugstore without a prescription!
-Never use alpha hydroxy with retinol at the same time unless you want to irritate the heck out of your skin.
As we age, our skin sadly produces less and less of certain substances. One of these is hyaluronic acid. HA hydrates skin and, like collagen, plumps the skin. Thankfully, some hyaluronic acid creams really help to replenish your skin's supply.
Cerave moisturizing cream has been my FAVORITE face lotion for years and fulfills my hyaluronic acid needs. I try a ton of different products all the time, but this one has always been the top performer. This is yet another product, heavily recommended by my dermatologist. But, I was using this stuff even before he mentioned it.
Squalene is yet another substance that disappears with age. Babies have a lot of it, but by the time we're in our 20's, it's almost gone. In addition to being a super moisturizer, squalene makes any other skincare product layered over top more effective by pulling the substances deeper into the skin.
Sheet masks in themselves are a nourishing experience, but pair it with squalene, and I would be extremely surprised if you didn't wake up with softer, dewier skin the next morning!
I only recently discovered My Beauty Diary sheet masks, but have already tried many of their different sheet masks. My favorite, by far, is My Beauty Diary Squalene restorative mask, and it has become a mainstay to my weekly skincare routine.
Oh, and take advantage of our tip on how to get 2 uses out of 1 sheet mask. Read here.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that is beneficial for brightening, and collagen creation. When paired with vitamin E, it also helps to prevent DNA damage from UV rays.
While I've been quite loyal to vitamin C serums, I haven't been loyal to a particular brand. Currently, I'm using this. If you've got one that you really love, please let us all know in the comments!
-When using a vitamin C serum, be sure to store the bottle tightly sealed in a dark cool place. Vitamin C becomes inactive with sun and air exposure.
-Never combine vitamin C with alpha-hydroxy; it causes vitamin C to become inactive.
So, these are my holy grail skincare products that I've learned over many years of trial and error and asking dermatologists.
If you've got a skin tip, please share it in the comments. We all love learning how to stay youthful!
