A Carrie Bradshaw favorite, Jimmy Choos’ heels have become a shoe-lover's best friend in the 18 years since the company was founded. Thus, it’s no surprise that Choo Yeang Keat, the designer's birth name, comes from a family of shoe makers!
The Malaysian-born designer was born in 1961 and, in fact, made his own shoe at the tender age of 11. After graduating from Cordwainers Technical College in London, Choo opened a custom shoe business in Hackney, England. After witnessing his high level of skill and gorgeous designs, customers started flocking to purchase the shoes. Even Princess Diana was a huge fan! (Choo was even invited to Kensington Palace on numerous occasions to visit the royal style icon!)
For a while, the world of designer footwear was dominated by only men. Christian Louboutin and Mahnolo Blahnik were extremely successful, but completely headed up by men. Choo realized he would need something more to make him stand out amongst the rest (a woman’s touch, of course!). That’s where Tamara Mellon, shoe-loving editor at British Vogue, came in. Mellon and Choo began collaborating in the early 90s which later turned into a full partnership, Jimmy Choo Ltd.
Since 1996, Jimmy Choo Ltd. has been producing some of our favorite shoes! From sneakers to pumps, Jimmy Choo has had it all. When Cate Blanchett stepped on the red carpet of the 1999 Oscars, women all around the world flocked to his U.S. stores. The new millennium brought the love of Jimmy Choos to a whole new level: the famous “feather” heel was immortalized by Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City. A boots collection soon followed the coveted heels and more awards show appearances followed.
The brand further expanded to include a gorgeous selection of handbags and (thankfully) JimmyChoo.com successfully launched in 2006, giving us complete access to all of our favorite indulgences. Whether it be footwear, handbags, or even some fabulous shades, Jimmy Choo Ltd. has come a long way since 1996, and we’re so excited to see how far it will go.
